Service Description

The treatment of peripheral neuropathy (PIN) in conventional medicine is limited and the resulting damage to life quality in suffering patients is high. A successful treatment protocol has been developed by Matthew Bauer in North America and early research as to its effectiveness is impressive. Acupuncture may indeed be the only treatment intervention that can help patients. Aims of session: Gain knowledge of the specific Bauer needle technique, treatment strategy and lifestyle advice for the treatment of PIN. Develop clinical reasoning skills to figure out how we blend what is essentially a ‘new protocol’ treatment technique with our understanding of TCM diagnosis and treating the patient’s individual pathology. Content: PIN: Aetiology, symptoms, prognosis and conventional treatment. Learn the Bauer protocol technique: needling/treatment planning/patient lifestyle advice. Clinical Reasoning using x 2 cases from clinic: What do we see v what do we do: TCM diagnosis/individual treatment. Maximum benefit dilemmas/dosage applied to acupuncture. Charmian Wylde has been in practice as an acupuncturist since 1989, set up the Birmingham Centre for Chinese Medicine, and most recently Ashdon Acupuncture until moving back to Dorset in December. She has worked extensively in acupuncture education which includes writing and running the BSc degree in Acupuncture at The University of East London for over a decade. She has worked for the BAAB and completed an MA on the intercultural obstacles surrounding the communication and integration of a traditional oriental system of medicine into contemporary medicine in the West.
